Arigamix attended february meeting of IT club at ELES

On Wednesday 12th February, the meeting of Palsit’s IT club members which Arigamix also attended,
took place at ELES, transmission and distribution system operator of the Republic of Slovenia, where it was covered:

  • Brief presentation of challenges in the power system and energy.
  • Presentation of digital tools and advanced technologies that they introduce.
  • The role of artificial intelligence and innovation in solving challenges in energy.
  • Examples of the use of new approaches for greater reliability and efficiency of energy systems.

    Our host was brilliant mr. Gorazd Ažman, deputy director of ICT, followed by skilled senior data analyst mr. Roman Tomažič.

Next to contents mentioned above, we dived deeper into current insight and learned newest information about:

The duck curvea graph of power production over the course of a day that shows the timing imbalance between peak demand and solar power generation;
The Dunkelflautea period of time in which little or no energy can be generated with wind and solar power, because there is neither wind nor sunlight;
The simultaneity factor, when not all electrical loads in a building draw their maximum power at the same time. Instead, there are times when some devices are switched off or inactive.
And we learned about newest changes in
RES integration: the incorporation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES)—such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass—into the existing energy systems, particularly the power grid. The goal is to ensure that renewable energy is efficiently generated, distributed, and used while maintaining grid stability and reliability.

Eye opening was information of how much vegetation management is done by Eles and how plants can affect the power grid. AI used in that segment are satellite and drone images which give insight into maintenance needs.

A lot of potential for improvement shows in finding ways to use solar energy directly, like charging electric vehicles by day while the sun is shining at the point where they are mostly located (workplaces and grocery stores) and skipping the need to store harnessed energy into batteries.

After covering the newest information, the members were invited to the diagnostic and analytical center where mr. Roman Tomažič presented the systems and work of their team.
